Risk & Trading plays a key role within Paddy Power Betfair to provide both qualitative and quantitative expertise in the areas of sports trading, analytics and risk management.
As a bookmaker we take calculated risks associated with the outcome of sporting events and the betting behaviours of its customers. The primary focus within the department is to manage this risk effectively in order to maintain healthy profit margins for the company. This is achieved by constantly evolving and being an industry leader in the development of predictive quantitative models coupled with the expertise from our in-house traders and analysts.
The Quants & Analytics Team is a core function within Risk & Trading and aligns itself with the overall goals of the department through the use of statistical analysis, data science and development of sophisticated predictive models.
Our vision for the future is to create an environment where maths, statistics & analysis and quantitative methods in conjunction with advanced machine learning can provide automated solutions in order to scale and improve our trading and risk management practices.
In this role you will operate as an internal consultant across our Racing and Sports operations with scope extending to exchange, promotions retail, online, marketing, and financial performance. Using your numerical and technology capabilities you will play a key role in research, analysis and communication of results to these teams and senior management.
What you’ll be doing…
Deliver high-quality quantitative analysis and tools to aid more accurate pricing, optimum pricing strategy and effective risk management decisions;
Improve our understanding of customer behaviour, effectiveness of promotions and specials, exchange activity;
Demonstrate accurate, data driven insights and predictions using visualisations and clear explanations of results, recommendations, methods, biases and limitations;
With the support of the team, propose the right methodology and approach given the type of problem being solved;
Bring your data insights to life and drive them to be actioned efficiently by delivering scalable solutions such as user interfaces and automated reporting.
Take responsibility to learn the necessary skills and techniques in order to work with independence, integrity and accuracy;

What we’re looking for…
Honours degree in a numerate or technical discipline (Maths, statistics, economics, engineering science, finance, computer science).
1-2 years’ experience in an analytical or quantitative role or MSc/PhD programme an advantage;
Knowledge of statistical or machine learning methods (e.g. regression) and experience of using statistical software and techniques (R, Matlab, SPSS, etc.) an advantage;
Proficient in Microsoft Excel; Advanced Excel an advantage;
Knowledge of SQL and experience of manipulation of large datasets a distinct advantage;
Programming languages such as Python, VBA, C# or Java an advantage;
Interest in the gambling industry, sports or horse racing a distinct advantage;
Technologies change and analytical and modelling techniques evolve so an enthusiasm to learn all of the above or continue to develop current skills and knowledge is key.
