1 to 2 YEARS’ PQE

The Company

In 2016, Paddy Power and Betfair merged to form one of the leading sports betting and gaming groups in the world: Paddy Power Betfair plc. The merger propelled the enlarged group into the FTSE 100. Recently, the Group merged its US business with fantasy sports provider FanDuel to continue its growth in the United States.

The Paddy Power brand is widely seen as one of the most distinctive consumer brands in the UK and Ireland. The Betfair brand is famous for innovation: Betfair pioneered the betting exchange in 2000 – a product which altered the landscape of the sports betting industry.

Today, PPB is a force to be reckoned with. We have a market-leading presence in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA, as well as a range of B2C and B2B operations across Europe.

The Role

Reporting to a Senior Legal Counsel, you’ll advise the company on a wide variety of commercial technology and e-commerce issues. We like our lawyers to have as much exposure across the business as possible and so, you’ll be advising the business directly on tech contracts, sponsorship, advertising, marketing and consumer issues, and regulatory matters. Crucially, we’ll need you to be able to draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts under demanding deadlines. Having the confidence to work autonomously will be essential.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing commercial contracts and licences.
  • Advising the marketing department on the content of advertising and promotions.
  • Dealing with and responding to complaints made to the Advertising Standard Authority.
  • Advising in relation to IP matters such as passing off, trade mark infringement, image rights and copyright.
  • Advising in relation to customer disputes and complaints, including matters referred to PPB’s regulators.
  • Where required, supporting PPB’s Regulatory Affairs and Compliance Teams.

The Candidate

We’re looking for a general commercial lawyer that has around 1 to 2 years’ PQE.

You will have trained at a highly regarded law firm. Some previous in-house experience is desirable, but not essential. You’ll be a great communicator, build relationships with key commercial contacts and have the ability to balance the commercial demands of the business against legal risk.

Although exposure to the gambling industry or an interest in sport would be useful, a desire to understand PPB’s business and work in a fast-moving, technology-driven sector within a dynamic regulatory environment is crucial.
